Sports massage in summer? Key adaptations in consultation

Summer is undoubtedly one of the seasons with the highest concentration of physical activity: popular races, outdoor training, beach sports… All this is a challenge for muscles and joints. If you work with sports massage in your practice, it is advisable to make some adaptations so that the therapy is effective and safe during these hot months.

One of the first aspects to consider is the use of massage oils. massage oils with a light texture, which are absorbed quickly and are not heavy. Heat and perspiration can make the skin more reactive, so avoid products that are too dense or overly perfumed. Alternate with cold massage creams is a great idea, as they provide a cooling effect that relieves heaviness and inflammation after exercise.

The pressure and duration of the session may also need to be adjusted. In summer, tissues are more irrigated and the sensation of body heat increases, so an excessively deep or prolonged massage may cause discomfort. It is advisable to opt for somewhat softer passes, to work progressively and to be attentive to the patient’s sensations.

The pressotherapy is a very interesting complement for the summer. It helps to stimulate venous return and reduce the feeling of tired legs, especially in athletes who train in high temperatures. Finally, do not forget to recommend your patients a good hydration before and after the session and remind them not to expose themselves to the intense sun right after the massage. With these adaptations, sports massage will continue to be a key tool for preventing injuries and improving performance even during the hottest months.
